KANGAR: SM Agama Al-Islahmiyah (Matri), which failed to make the cut in the qualifying round of the RHB-The Star Mighty Minds Challenge last year, came back with determination to win the challenge this year.

Team leader Nur Syahiidah Mohamad Ikhiwan said there were screams of joy among the members following the surprise win.

“During the competition, we kept on encouraging and motivating each other,” she said.

Nur Syahiidah and teammates Siti Nur Haziqah Muhyiddin and Farhatun Najwa Taufek Ali, all 15, said they learnt from their past mistakes and returned well-prepared for this year's competition.

“However, we were a bit nervous during the hands-on category when we had to construct a model of a snow house,” Farhatun Najwa said.
Second and third place in the Lower Secondary category went to SM Sains Tuanku Syed Putra and SMK Tengku Sulaiman respectively.
In the Upper Secondary category, the MRSM Beseri team comprising Muhammad Affiq Abd Rahman, Muhammad Asmat Abd Rahabudeen and Muhamad Akmal Muhamad Sharudin took first spot.
“Though we knew what to expect in the competition, we still had to race against time to complete a model of a fruit-picking device in the third round,” said team leader Muhammad Affiq.
Another team from the same school took second place while third place went to SMK Perlis.
The winning teams received prizes from RHB Bank Berhad Kedah/Perlis area manager Hasmah Jusoh and Star Publications (M) Bhd circulation manager (north) Oun Sui Leng.
The members of the winning team in each category walked away with RM5,000 while the school received a desktop computer.
The second and third prize winners of each category received RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively while their schools were awarded a 32-inch LCD television and a fax machine.
The nationwide competition is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Berhad and RHB Banking Group.
The challenge will be heading to Johor, Penang, Perak and Selangor soon.
The food and beverage sponsor is McDonald's Malaysia.
